Ruby red color with aromas of cherry, toasted oak, and light spice. The flavors are bright, more Rainer Cherry mixed with some powdered chocolate and toasted notes.
2021 was a very interesting growing season. The winter was normal and spring started off nice and smooth. Temperatures slowly warmed and the grapes went through set and bloom right on time. In late June we had a heatwave that impacted the rest of the vintage. We hit a high of 118 degrees and had over 45 days of triple digit weather. The grapes stayed small and the crop load was smaller but loaded with intense flavor.
We pick our Sangiovese from two different vineyard blocks, one planted in 2006 and the other in 2008. The clusters are usually quite big so we trim the shoulders or sometimes cut off a portion to increase intensity in the grapes. The hot summer helped keep the grapes smaller this vintage and the resulting wine is a little more rich. The two lots were fermented separately and aged for over a year before blending together to create the final wine. There is a little Cabernet Sauvignon added to the blend giving more length and complexity to the wine.
